Course Description
Cognitive pragmatics is the study of the linguistic aspects of language use within the methodological and theoretical framework of cognitive science, which this course is about – presenting pragmatics within an overall program to study language as a communication system. Pragmatics is, on one hand, the study we rely on in order to elucidate the relevant assumptions and the logic of the inferences, and we will deal mainly with the extent to which language interpretation and production depends on language users' assumptions and inferences about each other. On the other hand, we will study pragmatics in order to understand the communicative functions of language, so as to unveil human cognitive processes in discourse understanding. Topics on cognition and grammar, discourse analysis and semantics/pragmatics interface, as aspects of an overall functional framework for explaining language in use, will be touched upon.

Course Objectives
It is hoped that the students may learn, via systematic pragmatics, the factors that influence a speaker's choice to say something the way s/he does, and a hearer's interpretation of what has been said as well as what was meant by it. In order to gain a better understanding of how humans communicate and how human mind works, we will discuss issues related to the negotiation of interpretation and roles that characterize pragmatics, During the course, we would look at the way people actually use language in context, and provide a reasonable account of why people say a particular thing on a particular occasion, what people are trying to do with their language, and how people cooperate in conversation.

Course Requirements
1. Written comments on reading materials
2. Oral reports and class participation
3. Term paper
Active participation in class discussion, presentation and pertinent comments on peer’s work are expected. Students rotate presenting required readings. Each presenter should upload by Friday noon right after his report, along with the files of their handouts or powerpoint slides. This first draft of critique will receive comments from the class and needs to undergo revision in order to be turned in as the final version by the third Friday from the presentation. A final presentation is scheduled on the last class, and the term paper is required within a week from the final presentation.
